Galaxy Note 7 Battery Fires
Samsung released its Galaxy Note 7 line August 19, 2016. Reports soon came of the phones’ batteries overheating and bursting into flame. As of September 1, 2016, 35 customers had reported a battery cell issue with a Note 7 phone. The batteries have caught on fire or exploded during charging or even normal use. A man in one incident left his phone connected to the charger in his car; the phone caught fire and burned the car.
Samsung Note 7 Banned By Airlines
Airlines and aviation authorities have banned Samsung Note 7 phones on airplanes. On 15 September, 2016, the FAA instructed travelers not to use or charge their Note7s in the air and not to stow them in checked luggage.
Samsung Recalls Galaxy Note 7
On September 2, Samsung announced it had found a battery cell problem with the Galaxy Note 7 and would cease all sales and shipments. Samsung said it would replace the 2.5 million already sold or anyone’s current device with a new one over the coming weeks.
Stop Using the Samsung Galaxy Note 7
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has asked Samsung Galaxy Note 7 owners “to power them down and stop charging or using the device.” Samsung has also instructed Galaxy Note 7 owners to cease using the phones and to exchange them as soon as possible.
