Protonix Kidney Disease Lawsuit

PPI Lawyer

Protonix kidney disease lawsuits are being filed for those who used proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Protonix and then developed chronic kidney injury or chronic kidney disease.

Protonix Problems

PPI heartburn drugs have long been overused under the assumption they are safe. Important safety information has been withheld from users and medical overseers. Several recent studies have demonstrated links between proton pump inhibitors such as Protonix and increased risks of acute kidney damage.

We may file or settle a claim individually or as part of a group on a case-by-case basis.

Whether your claim is filed individually or as part of a group fighting the same defendant, our goal is always to provide each of our clients with individual attention.

Protonix linked to CKD, Renal Failure

A study published in April 2016 links Protonix and other proton pump inhibitor heartburn drugs with kidney disease and renal failure. Researchers in a 5-year study compared PPIs to histamine H2 receptor blockers. They found 15% of PPI users were diagnosed with CKD, compared with 11% of H2-blocker users. That means there’s a 28% increased risk of kidney disease for those on PPIs.

Protonix Background

Protonix is a popular proton pump inhibitor (PPI) heartburn medication meant to reduce stomach acid in order to lessen symptoms of heartburn and pain caused by stomach acids backing up into the esophagus. This mechanism is thought to help heal the esophagus. Made by Pfizer, Protonix was approved by FDA in February 2000.

High Blood Pressure  (Hypertension)

An April 2015 study published in CMAJ Open identified an increased risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) associated with PPI heartburn medications like Protonix. Researchers looked at data on 300,000 older patients. They found PPI users had a 2.5 fold increased risk of acute kidney injury, and a 3x higher risk of acute interstitial nephritis compared to non-users.

Acute Kidney Injury

AKI is characterized by a sudden decrease in kidney function that occurs within  hours or days, according to the National Kidney Foundation. AKI causes waste products’ buildup in the bloodstream, making it difficult for kidneys to balance bodily fluids. Acute kidney injury can affect other vital organs – including the brain, heart, lungs.

  • Omeprazole: Prilosec
  • Lansoprazole: Prevacid
  • Rabeprazole: Aciphex
  • Esomeprazole: Nexium

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

A January 2016 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine also raised concerns regarding links between PPIs and kidney function. This study found PPIs may increase chronic kidney disease (CKD) risks by 50%. Researchers examined data from some 10,000 people over 10+ years. They found PPI use linked to a higher incidence of CKD. It appears the risk of chronic kidney disease associated with proton pump inhibitors stems from recurrent acute kidney injury or interstitial nephritis.

CKD Symptoms

The human body can tolerate great reduction in kidney function. The Mayo Clinic reports most people with chronic kidney disease manifest no symptoms. Symptoms that do appear can include urine output changes, chest pain, loss of appetite, high blood pressure, sleep problems, fatigue and weakness, decreased mental sharpness, swelling of feet and ankles, shortness of breath, itching, vomiting, and many more.

CKD symptoms are often non-specific. They may be caused by other illnesses. Because kidneys are highly adaptable and able to compensate for lost function, symptoms may not appear until kidneys have suffered irreversible damage.

Intestinal Nephritis

PPIs may increase the risk of acute interstitial nephritis (also known as tubulo-interstitial nephritis). This type of kidney damage affects the kidneys’ interstitium, which surrounds the tubules. In 2014, FDA announced new warnings to PPI medications would need to include nephritis. These warnings may have arrived too latefor may people.

Nephritis Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of nephritis can include:

  • Acute Kidney Injury
  • Bloat
  • Blood in the urine
  • Confusion
  • Decrease in urine output
  • Exhaustion
