Methanol poisoning can cause blindness and even death, but other unlisted toxic ingredients in some of the recalled products, such as benzene and acetaldehyde, can also cause serious health problems.

Methanol exposure can lead to several maladies including:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Headache
• blurred vision
• permanent blindness
• seizures
• coma
• permanent nervous system damage
• death

Global Sanitizers recalls Medically Minded Hand Sanitizer

Global Sanitizers has issued a recall for Medically Minded Hand Sanitizer. Global Sanitizers is voluntarily recalling 50 thousand units of Medically Minded hand sanitizers, because FDA analysis has found the product to contain methanol.

Young Children especially at risk

Risk Statement: Substantial methanol exposure can result in coma, seizures, permanent blindness, permanent damage to the central nervous system, or death. Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk, young children who accidently ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk for methanol poisoning. To date, Global Sanitizers said it has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall.

Consumers, distributors, and retailers who have the recalled hand sanitizers were advised to stop using, distributing and/or selling them, and to return them where they were bought. More Hand Sanitizers Recalled

In addition, Dibar Nutricional S. de R.L. De C.V. (Dibar) also issued a hand sanitizer recall this month due to methanol contamination.

The Mexican company Dibar Nutricional S. de R.L. De C.V. (“Dibar”) recalled 27 lots of DIBAR Labs Hand Sanitizer packaged in 8oz and 16 oz. bottles. Dibar also recalled 2 lots of ProtectoRx Hand Sanitizer packaged in 2oz and 16oz bottles. Dibar said, “These products are being recalled after testing conducted by our firm revealed the presence of methanol.”

The company said, “The products can be identified by the label, scent, and lot code provided in the table at the end of this release. These products were distributed nationwide in the USA through S.E.N.D. LLC and its customers. Products labeled as ProtectoRx Hand Sanitizer were distributed in Puerto Rico through PR TRADING LLC and its customers.

Dibar Nutricional S. de R.L. De C.V., has notified its direct distributors by a letter with confirmatory email and asked them to immediately remove the recalled products from commerce. Consumers, distributors and retailers that have the hand sanitizers being recalled should stop using, distributing and/or selling them and return them to their place of purchase.
