Boppy recalls 3.3 Million Baby Loungers after 8 Infants Die Timely Insights on Laws, Issues and New Developements
|
BoppyThe Boppy Company recalled, in September 2021, 3.3 million of its popular baby lounger pillows following the deaths of eight infants who were placed on them. The infants died between December 2015 and June 2020.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and The Boppy Company, of Golden, Colorado announced the recall of the Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers, and Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers.

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Report

The CSPC reports that infants can suffocate if they roll or move on the lounger in positions that obstruct their breathing. Infants can also be placed in dangerous positions on the lounger, so that they can roll off of it onto another dangerous external surface such as an adult pillow or soft bedding.

The infants reportedly suffocated after being placed on the lounger on their back, side or stomach, and were found on their side or on their stomach.

Acting chair of the CPSC Robert S. Adler said: “These types of incidents are heartbreaking. Loungers and pillow-like products are not safe for infant sleep, due to the risk of suffocation. Since we know that infants sleep so much of the time – even in products not intended for sleep – and since suffocation can happen so quickly, these Boppy lounger products are simply too risky to remain on the market.”

Mr. Adler would urge parents who own a Boppy newborn lounger to immediately stop using it.

Defective Baby Product Lawsuits

“Manufacturers know, or certainly should know, that newborns don’t have the strength or coordination for self-protection when shifting on the wrong surface or with the wrong cradle design,” said plaintiff’s attorney David P. Matthews. “The infant is the most vulnerable among us. We have litigated these cases for many years and that is the definition of a product defect.”

The recall involves three similar products:

* Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers

* Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers.

Sold in a variety of colors and styles, these products measure about 23 inches long, 22 inches wide, and 7 inches high, according to the CPSC.

The product was sold nationwide (and in Canada) in baby retailers like Pottery Barn Kids, Target, Walmart, and Amazon (on line) from January 2004 through September 2021, for prices between $30 and $44.
