Exploding Takata Air Bags
Takata Corp., a Japanese auto parts company, has some 30% of the world market in air bags. Explosive ammonium nitrate in a metal canister inflates Takata air bags. The air bag accidental explosion problem may be triggered by that ammonium nitrate burning all at once, which can in turn blow the canister into metal shrapnel. These metal shards can then fly into passengers and injure or kill them.
16 Air Bag Deaths
Exploding Takata air bags are suspected or implicated in the deaths of at least 16 people. Another 50 people, mostly Americans, have been injured by Takata air bags, some very seriously.
70 Million Air Bag Recalls
The potentially fatal air bag problem has triggered the largest safety recall in U.S. history.Roughly 70 million air bag inflators, sold by 15 automakers, have now been recalled.
